Gaurang Amonkar is a first year medical student at Carle Illinois COM. Originally from Boston, MA, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. After undergrad, he dedicated 3 years to performing translational research in the Newborn Developmental and Pediatric Surgical Research Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital. There, his main project was to help develop an in vitro cell culture model using basal stem cells derived from the lungs of infants suffering from Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, a polygenic congenital disease that affects the lungs and diaphragm. He is passionate about delving deeper into the study of genetic diseases and expanding my knowledge in bioinformatics.
